“How can you buy or sell the sky – the warmth of the land?” begins the writing in this artwork, attributed to Chief Seattle ( 1786 – 1866 ). Inspired by these words, I incorporated the full text into this portrait while working in transparencies and mixed media to symbolize layers of time. Reflecting on these words that describe our collective ecological responsibility, I feel they reverberate with us as much today as they did then.
